Few Tips on Fire Fighting

How do you make sure your work location is fire safe?

Ensure fire safety equipment is free and clear of obstructions and readily available.

If your building has the following, check to confirm:

Manual fire extinguishers are active.

Know your Emergency Exit and ensure Exit doors are clear and unobstructed.

Exit signs are clearly visible.

It's easy to remember how to use a fire extinguisher if you can remember the acronym PASS

which stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

Pull the pin.
This will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.

Aim at the base of the fire.If you aim at the flames (which is frequently the temptation), the extinguishing agent will fly right through and do no good. You want to hit the fuel.

Squeeze the top handle or lever.
This depresses a button that releases the pressurized extinguishing agent in the extinguisher.

Sweep from side to side
until the fire is completely out. Start using the extinguisher from a safe distance away, then move forward. Once the fire is out, keep an eye on the area in case it re-ignites.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF THERE IS A FIRE

DO’S

Maintain the queue while evacuating.

Get yourself and all others out of and away from the building.

Step down through Fire Exit.

If there is smoke inside the building/room band yourself and move out from the building/room.

After you are in a safe distance from the building, call the fire department at 199 or the local emergency telephone number. Tell them the location of the fire.

Hang ID card for identity.

DON’TS

Do not attempt to get back into a building to retrieve personal property.

Don’t rush and create panic during evacuation, it will cause accident.

If it is a large fire never put yourself in danger using a fire extinguisher. If you use a fire extinguisher, only do so from a safe distance and always have a means to get away.

Caution: Use Fire Exit and don’t use elevator/lift at any case.
